Jukebox "Snippet" 45s: Chronological List of Site Additions
As I add 45s to our inventory, I pick select 45s to highlight with mp3 "snippets" so you can hear the music yourself. I only record "snippets" of tunes I particularly like, ones I think have been under-played and under-appreciated, or ones that are so rare and wonderful I'll never hear them otherwise. For myself, I keep an iTunes playlist of these "snippets," and that playlist is one I listen to most often. These pages chronicle the mp3 "snippets" I've added to our online "jukebox" in reverse chronological order. You can browse the pages to see what was added and when. Click on the blue "Play" button to play the snippet, or click on a song's title to load the page. Many of these 45 records are still for sale, though just as many have been sold. I hope you enjoy perusing these pages as much as I have enjoyed putting them together!
This is Jennings' solo rendition of the classic country tune he cowrote with Willie Nelson. A couple of years later, Nelson and Jennings recorded a duet of the song, which went all the way to the top of the Country & Western Billboard chart.
Delicious early funk track from Detroit, made famous in 2006 when Beyonce sampled it heavily in her hit single, "Sugar Mama." The year of release is uncertain, but is likely to have been 1969 or 1970.
Brown was a white British soul singer who sounds a bit like Diana Ross. She also sang lead for Sweet Dreams. This is a very catchy, dangerously danceable soul romp. Starts out with a drum pattern from the Glam playbook, but quickly makes its true musical inspiration clear.
Without listening to this, you could be forgiven for thinking Julia might actually be a woman. But no, Julia was a Michigan band that was one of the early projects of the talented guitarist/songwriter Bill Mueller, better known as Blue Miller. On the Julia 45s, his lead guitar sounds very much like the stuff Joe Walsh was doing on his own and, earlier, as leader of the James Gang. Never a household name, Miller has nevertheless had an influential career in the music business, and this early single is testimony to the fact that he should be much better known than he is!
